WashPIRG - Evergreen Chapter

WashPIRG is an independent, statewide, student-run organization that works to protect the environment and consumers and end hunger and homelessness. For 30 years, students with WashPIRG’s Evergreen Chapter have been winning concrete changes that make a difference in people’s lives. WashPIRG helps students learn the skills of effective citizenship by providing opportunities for us to investigate social problems, find practical solutions, convince the media to pay attention, organize the public, and get decision-makers to act. This spring quarter, WashPIRG has two main campaigns: the Solar Campaign and the Get Big Money out of Politics Campaign.
The Solar Campaign is building public pressure on the state legislature to pass a bill that would cause Washington to get 10% of its energy from solar power, up from less than 1%. We have a wide range of volunteer opportunities where everyone can get involved, learn organizing skills, and make a real difference on climate change and air pollution. The solar campaign is democratically run, and we'd love to hear your ideas!
The long-term goal of the Get Big Money out of Politics Campaign is to pass a Constitutional Amendment overturning Citizens United and stating that corporations do not have the legal right to spend unlimited amounts of money to influence elections. We also want to empower small donors to ensure that candidates talk with their constituents rather than dialing for dollars.
Don’t be discouraged by the enormity of this task! For the first time in a while, campaign finance reform has some real momentum. Our short-term goals include: 1) Get Washington Senators Cantwell and Murray to co-sponsor the Fair Elections Now Act and to stand publicly for overturning Citizens United by cosponsoring the Democracy for All amendment. 2) Get the Represent.Us initiative on the ballot this fall and contribute 400 signatures. 3) Engage in get out the vote and voter registration efforts to get Washington voters to pass the Represent.Us initiative and I-735 this November.
