High-powered Evergreen team post an 88-73 victory over Whitman

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In men's non-conference action tonight in Sherwood Center. Evergreen upped its record to 6-1. Whitman slipped to 2-3 on the season. The Geoducks, who squeaked past Whitman 71-67 last month in Olympia, Wash., shot a sizzling 59.3 percent from the floor in the rematch.

Nathan Menefee led all scorers with 28 points. All five Geoduck starters scored in double figures, including Michael Ward who had 17 points and Julio Feliciano who notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Whitman's Chris Faidley, who entered the game averaging 31.5 points per game, was one of only two Missionaries hitting double digits in the scoring column. Sophomore Jordan Brandon came off the bench to score 12 points.

Whitman held its last lead at 10-9 with 13:39 left in the first half. That's when Evergreen uncorked a 27-6 run to take a 36-16 lead.

The Missionaries countered with a 13-2 burst, capped by Faidley's three-point play in the paint, to cut the deficit to 38-29 with three minutes remaining.

Regaining their scoring touch, Evergreen regained a 20-point lead, 56-36, six minutes into the second half and still led by 19 with 10:30 left in the game.

Four points from Faidley and baskets by Grant Brandal and Brandon pulled Whitman to within 11 points, 65-54, but Menefee responded with the next seven Geoduck points to put the game on ice.

Evergreen returns to Cascade Conference play on December 18th at Southern Oregon University.
