Geoducks Defeated at Buzzer as Yotes Win 71-69
January 11, 2009
OLYMPIA, Wash. - A tie game and seconds to go, College of Idaho's Kelvin Potts (Oakland, Calif.) found an open Craig McGee who dunked the ball just before the buzzer. The basket caused the Yotes bench to jump to their feet and rush the floor as they defeated Evergreen 71-69 to score their second upset of the week.
Evergreen (NAIA Div II #15) falls to 10-5 overall and 6-2 in the Cascade Conference as CI improves to 9-8 and 5-2.
The Geoducks only game lead with in the first two minutes as they jumped to a 5-3 lead. From then on the Yotes held a slim advantage the majority of the game.
Evergreen drew within one points early in the second half, fell behind and then closed again to their eventual 69-69 tie with seconds to go.
In shooting, College of Idaho had the advantage in all categories except free throws, one of the few opportunities Evergreen was given to make the game closer.
ESC failed to capitalize on this, taking some ill-timed shots at key times that allowed CI to gain a rebound to basket conversion far too often.
Evergreen made just under 38% of field goals to College of Idaho's 48%.
Nathan Menefee (Tacoma, Wash. ) managed 21 points for ESC but had a slow start with his shooting as the Yotes shifted their defense to force him to his weaker shooting side tonight. Menefee assisted on 5 baskets as well.
Running into foul trouble early, Nick Moore (Graham, WA) only saw 18 minutes of action in which he scored 14 points. Julio Feliciano (Tacoma, WA) led the team in rebounds with 10.
For the Yotes, Steffen Spinks had 20 points. McGee, who sweetened his 14 points with the game winning basket, also had 12 rebounds.
Evergreen plays at home on January 16th in a conference game with Northwest Christian College at 7:00 PM.
