Olympia, WA - Having swept The Evergreen State College a month ago in Salem, Ore., Western Baptist knew exactly what they needed to do in order to remain in second place in the Cascade Conference standings and make it harder for Evergreen to qualify for post-season play.
Seemingly unwilling to expend the amount of energy they did the previous week, in victories over visiting Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon, Evergreen (6-4 CCC, 9-7 Ovr) was swept, 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 34-32), for the second time this season by Western Baptist (7-3 CCC, 11-7 Ovr).
Senior Liz Howe was the dominant player on the court, scoring 17 kills on 37 attempts for the Warriors.
For Evergreen, sophomore Kristen Bartley (Lubbock, TX / Monterey HS) and senior Stephanie Short (Spokane, WA / Shadle Park HS) both had double digit kills (Bartley - 12, Short - 11) but there attacks were no where near as forceful as Howe's.
As a team, where Evergreen struggled the most during the match was in Serve Received. Western Baptist was credit with 10 Service Aces, 50% hitting the floor untouched, the other half deflecting off Geoduck arms.
Evergreen's National Player of the Week, middle blocker Meredith Lane (Olympia, WA / Olympia HS) had one of her lowest hitting performances of the season, converting only 8 of her 22 attacks into scoring kills.
Tomorrow night, Concordia will visit the campus of The Evergreen State College.
Have lost to Northwest, 3-0, in Kirkland, tonight, Concordia, like Evergreen has stepped a rung lower in the conference standings. Both teams should be hungry for a win, knowing that two losses during the weekend could very well prevent them from qualifying for post-season play.
Saturday nights game will be played in The Greenhouse, The Evergreen State College gymnasium, and will start at 7:00 p.m.
