Evergreen roars back, but can't catch Keelhaulers

OLYMPIA, Wa.  -- Trailing by nine at the half and by as many as 15 later on, The Evergreen State College women's basketball team rallied to within a basket of visiting California Maritime Academy but could get no closer and fell, 63-59, in its 2009-10 season opener.

Evergreen had the ball down 61-59 with 34 seconds to play but, despite a pair of time outs, couldn't get off a shot in time and was forced to foul when Maritime took possession. The Keelhaulers made both shots to put the game out of reach.

Lauren Westbrook led Maritime (1-0) and the game in scoring with 24.  Latrina Woods (JR/Skyway, Wa.) paced Evergreen (0-1) with 14 points while Jasmine Horton (SO/Tukwila/Foster HS) and Brittany Weaver (JR/Tacoma/Yakima Valley CC) had nine each. Box Score

Olympia, WA - This week when head coach Monica Heuer proudly watched her graduating seniors walk at Friday's graduation ceremony she knew the vacancies will be hard to fill.
