Former Player / Coach With Cascade Conference Roots Joins Coaching Staff

August 22, 2008

Olympia, WA - Head Coach Monica Heuer announced the hiring of Amber Evans to the Women's Basketball coaching staff beginning this fall. Evans has history as both player and coach in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.

Evans began her collegiate career as a player at Blue Mountain Community College in 2001. There she played varsity basketball for two years before graduating with an AA degree in psychology.

Moving on to a four year college, Evans played a year at Portland, Oregon's Cascade College. A knee injury sidelined her career early at the Cascade Conference school so she began coaching in 2003 as an assistant for the Thunderbirds.

After graduating from Cascade in 2004, Evans returned to Blue Mountain as the head women's basketball coach where she remained until last season.

Her success with the Blue Mountain program was immediate as the team tallied more season wins then the program had in nearly 10 years. In four years Evans had numerous players move on to 4 year schools including Rosalind Lee, Evergreen's strong forward player.

Off the court Evans served as a Behavior Specialist for the Hawthorne Alternative High School / Umatilla-Moro County Education Service District in Pendleton, Ore. There she spent the last four years working with at-risk youth and their families in Eastern Oregon as well a diverse group of young women from across the Northwest.

"I am extremely happy to be joining the program here at Evergreen State", says Evans. Adding, "I look forward to the opportunity to learn from their success as well as bringing my own experience and knowledge to the team. Geoduck Women's Basketball is a positive and competitive place to be and I am very excited to be a part of the program".

Monica Heuer is happy with the decision also. "We are thrilled to have Coach Evans joining our coaching staff. She is very knowledgeable with the NWACC and the Cascade Conference. She brings great enthusiasm and experience".

Coach Evans will be working in all aspects of the program. She is specifically looking forward to working with the post players and and helping with recruiting.

Evans was hired following assistant coach Derrick Pringle's departure. Pringle has moved on to Grays Harbor Community College to take the head women's coaching position there.

In addition to Pringle, several formal members of ESC women's basketball team and coaching staff are currently coaching:

  • Curtis Norwood - Head Coach at River Ridge High School ('08 State Champions)
  • Jennifer Schooler - Head Coach at Edmonds Community College
  • Rachel Ross (former player '07) - Head C team Coach at Aberdeen High School
