Saab makes sure tale of two halves has happy ending for Evergreen with clutch 3
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Sophomore point guard Alex Saab nailed a three-pointer with 11 seconds to play as The Evergreen State College women's basketball team lifted itself out of last place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference with a 57-55 victory over visiting Northwest Christian University on Friday night at The Greenhouse.
The game was truly a tale of two halves as, in the first, neither team could miss as NCU shot 69 percent and Evergreen 60. The Geoducks took advantage of 17 Beacon turnovers to grab a 36-31 lead at intermission. But in the second, both teams went cold with NCU shooting 39 percent and Evergreen 30.
With 9:26 to play, the Beacons' Kelsey Bolander scored to give NCU its first lead since the opening minutes, 44-43. After several lead changes, Evergreen found itself down 55-54 with :12 to play, but with Tana Palmason on the line to shoot two. Although Palmason missed both free throws, Katie Garcin snagged the rebound and kicked it out to Saab for what proved to be the winning trey.
Latrina Woods again led Evergreen in scoring with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field. She also had three steals. Garcin also reached double figures with 13 thanks to 3-of-4 three-point shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Lori Renner paced the Beacons with 15 and Calie McVicker added 11 points to go with five steals.
Evergreen (7-14, 3-7 in the CCC) hosts Corban on Saturday while Northwest Christian (8-11, 2-8) continues its road trip at Northwest University in Kirkland.
