Western Baptist 2, Evergreen 0
September 18, 2001
Olympia, WA - Evergreen goalkeeper Nora Moloney (Bainbridge Island, WA/ Western Oregon) had gone two and a half games without allowing a goal. That all came to an end when Western Baptist All-American sophomore KeriAnn Lawson put an unassisted goal in the back of the net early in the second half. That was all the Warriors would need to win the game.
"Nora had another great game," said Geoduck coach Arlene McMahon. Evergreen (2-4-1, 1-1) played the Warriors (2-4, 2-0) tough in the first half, but struggled to mount much of an offensive attack. Evergreen could only managed to get five shots off in the first half against the tough Warrior defense.
Western Baptist placed second in the Cascade Conference last year and should be in the running for the title again this year. "I think today's game earned us respect, they were the number two team in our conference last year," said McMahon.
Both teams had scoring chances in the first half, but neither team could capitalize. Evergreen junior Bethany Roth (Amherst, MA/ Amherst Regional HS) had a chance to tie the game off of a shot in the box, but the shot sailed high. The Warriors added a second goal with about 15 minutes to play. The Geoducks attacked the net hard late in the game, but couldn't come up with a goal.
Evergreen will hit the road this weekend for a pair of conference games against Eastern Oregon on Friday and Albertson College in Idaho on Saturday. Both games will start at 1:00 p.m.
