Evergreen 3, Cascade 2
September 28, 2001
Olympia, WA - The Geoducks got off to a great 3-0 start, but Cascade made the game close late in the second half. Evergreen dominated the first half and most of the second until a goal by Mindy Stanek gave the Thunderbirds (1-7, 1-5) hope. Evergreen (4-5-1, 3-2) did just enough to hang on and win the game 3-2.
Jackie Schlindwein (Anacortes, WA/ Anacortes HS) led the Geoduck attack with two goals in the game. Schlindwein, a mid-fielder for Evergreen, started the scoring for the Geoducks and added the second goal of the game as well. Tiffany Fenster (Seattle, WA/ Roosevelt HS) added an unassisted goal off of a corner kick. Fenster kicked a bender from the corner that landed in Cascade goal-keeper Andrea Scherzinger's hands, but she could not hang on to it, resulting in a goal. The goal was Fenster's seventh of the year.
The Thunderbirds scored with about 27 minutes to go in the game, off of Stanek's goal, to finally get on the scoreboard. That score gave Cascade enough of a spark, with only thirteen minutes left in the game, Stanek scored again to pull within one goal of the Geoducks, but Evergreen held off a late attack to hang on to the win.
Although not happy with giving up the two late goals, Evergreen coach Arlene McMahon was happy with the overall play of the team, and the result. "We passed the ball extremely well today. We built up a big lead and that gave us enough of a cushion to hang on," McMahon said. McMahon was also impressed by Schlindwein's effort on the field. "She had two big goals for us from the mid-field position, that is a big lift for us. This win keeps us in the hunt for a chance at the conference title," said McMahon.
The Geoducks are on the road on Saturday in Salem, OR. to take on Western Baptist College. The game begins at 4:00 p.m.
