Olympia, WA - A pair of Northwest Conference women's soccer rivals squared off in the second round of the Arno Zoske Tournament Saturday afternoon (Aug. 30) here at Evergreen State College, with the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes escaping with a 3-1 win over the George Fox University Bruins.

Alyssa Burleson boosted the Lutes to a 2-0 lead with unassisted goals at 34:37 and 41:14 in the first half, but the Bruins cut that margin in half before the break as Shannon Miles scored her first career goal at 43:41 with an assist from Danielle Bowie. Miles, expected to be a starter last year as a freshman, missed all but one game in 2002 with an injury and was given a red-shirt year.

Nicole Roeder gave PLU a little breathing room early in the second half, scoring at the 52:00 mark off a feed from Brita Lider. The PLU defense held the Bruins to only 8 total shots and just 4 on goal, with Liz Chaze making 3 saves. George Fox keeper Stacey Ozga made 7 saves as the Lutes took 16 shots.

George Fox fell to 0-2 in the season, while it was the season opener for Pacific Lutheran. The Bruins return to action next Sunday (Sept. 7), hosting California State University-Hayward at Morse Field in Newberg at 12:00 noon.
