Evergreen Loses on Road to Wildcats

September 9, 2004

Ellensburg, WA - Freshmen Michelle Beattie (Seattle, WA/Blanchet HS) and Hilary Davidson (Auburn,WA) each scored second half goals, and rookie goalkeeper Samantha Kooy (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian HS) made six saves in her collegiate debut as Central Washington defeated Evergreen State, 2-0, in its home women's soccer opener on Wednesday.

After a scoreless first half, in which the host Wildcats (3-1-0) had numerous scoring opportunities - 10 shot attempts to Evergreen State's five - Beattie scored on Central Washington's second attempt of the second half just 3:33 into the period. She took a pass from Lindsay Mitchell (Edgewood, WA/Federal Way HS) and found the net behind Geoducks keeper Carly Stewart for her third tally of the season to give CWU a 1-0 lead.

Davidson gave Central Washington an insurance tally at the 70th minute, after defender Chelsea Beck (Renton, WA/Liberty HS) lobbed a pass over midfield. Davidson recovered the ball, beat her defender and then deked her way past Stewart for her first collegiate tally to seal the Wildcats' third win in four outings.

Evergreen State (0-4-1) did its part to stay close with the Wildcats, chalking up 11 of its 16 shot attempts in the second half. The Geoducks nearly had the halftime lead as Kaylan Kelley's shot with just under eight minutes to go in the period ricocheted off the crossbar, and another shot four minutes later by teammate Kimberly Force was saved off the goal line by CWU's Beck. Of Evergreen State's 11 second-half shots, five came on net and were saved by Kooy. For the contest, Central Washington held a narrow 18-16 shot advantage. The Wildcats were whistled for 19 fouls to the Geoducks' 15, but had five corner kicks to Evergreen State's four.

Evergreen will next play Saturday in Canada against perennial national power Simon Fraser. Game time is 2:00 pm.
