Evergreen opens season with three wins

September 9, 2005

Olympia, WA - Geoduck soccer started off on the right foot in 2005 as the Evergreen women's soccer team reeled off three straight wins to open the season. It is a remarkable turn around from last season when the women's soccer program went nine games before getting it's first win and 13 games before getting three wins.

The Geoducks have tallied 2-0 wins over NAIA Region III's fifth-ranked team, Morningside College and area rival Pacific Lutheran University, and a 3-1 win at Central Washington University. The win over NCAA Division II Central Washington was the first for the Geoducks in 10 meeting with the Wildcats dating back to 1996.

With the fast start, the Geoducks find themselves ranked fifth in the opening NAIA Region I rankings behind Simon Fraser, Concordia University, Carroll College and Corban College. It is the first regional recognition for the Geoducks since 2003.

Five different players have scored this season for Evergreen. Junior forward Alice Fox-Dietz and Alisha White lead the Geoduck attack with two goals each. Sophomore forward Kate Green has one goal and two assists. Senior midfielder Elizabeth Lieberknecht and sophomore midfielder Maeve Dempsey have one goal apiece.

Goalkeeper Carly Stewart has conceded only one goal in three games. The junior has faced 40 shots, recorded 18 saves and has two shutouts on the year.

In their last outing the Geoducks traveled to Pacific Lutheran University to face a young and talented NCAA Division III opponent. The two teams tied 2-2 last season at Evergreen. The visitors went up 1-0 in the 12th minute when Kate Green played a ball behind the right side of the PLU defense. Senior All-America forward Alisha White out-raced a defender to the ball, touched it around the PLU goalkeeper and passed it into an open net for her second goal of the season.

The margain held until the 80th minute when sophomore midfielder Maeve Dempsey took a pass from Kate Green and fired a shot from 25 yards over the outstretched arms of PLU's goalkeeper into the upper right corner of the goal. The goal was the second of Dempsey's career and first of the 2005 season.

Evergreen returns to action today against Cascade Collegiate Conference opponent Cascade College. The Geoducks are home next weekend as well as they host conference rivals Albertson College and Eastern Oregon University.
