Evergreen downs SOU in first shutout of the season
September 28, 2007
Olympia, WA - Evergreen scored their first shutout of '07 in their 2-0 win over Southern Oregon University (6-5-1) in a Cascade Conference game today.
Both teams went scoreless through the first half in a game Evergreen coach John Purtteman described as, "smart, and well played by both teams".
The Geoducks focused on their strong defense, which saw the return of players that had been out the last few games with injuries.
While SOU took the offensive the first half, all but one shot taken were long and off target. The Raiders had ten shots with two shots on target saved by Geoduck keeper Katie Cagle (So, Estacada, OR). Evergreen tallied 7 and 5 in shots.
Frosh Monica Ragan (Boise, ID / Boise HS) put the Geoducks on the scoreboard first. Sixty-one minutes into the game she showed her speed as she controlled a loose ball, dribbled past defenders and punched a ground level shot between the legs of SOU keeper Melanie Hopkins.
Nine minutes later it was Ragan again with a diagonal shot from the left corner of the penalty box to seal the game at 2-0.
"Monica was the difference for us today" noted Purtteman. Both teams played good soccer".
Tomorrow Evergreen hosts Oregon Institute of Technology in a 1:00 PM conference game.
