Typical Dreams: Psychoanalysis, Philosophy and Popular Culture

If we share a collective reality in our waking hours, dreams are usually our own.  But are there exceptions?  Are there really such things as typical dreams, and if there are, where do they come from?

Evergreen faculty Kathleen Eamon shared information about her summer program on the role dreams play for psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, what they say about us, how they are related to desire, and why, if dreams are meant to represent the fulfillment of a wish, we might conjure dreams that fill us with shame, anxiety, or dread—and why and how those very feelings contribute to our capacity for social life.
 

Taking Freud at his word that dreams matter, that they are more than a nightly departure from waking life, Kathleen explored what dreams can tell us about both ourselves and our cultural tastes.

Kathleen referred to Sigmund Freud’s 1908 article, Creative Writers and Day-Dreaming. This short piece explores the sources of inspiration and imagination for creative writers.
