Minutes - Wednesday, February 4, 2003

Members present:
Lee Hoemann
Marla Skelley
John Carmichael
Mary Ann Steele
Jim Beaver
Edie Harding
Susan Bustetter, honorary member
Kate Lykins Brown (recorder)

The group met to handle three items:
1. Introduction of new Director of College Relations Jim Beaver, who will take over for Kate as co-chair.

2. Update on the activities proposed by the Police Services Community Review Board, summarized by Kate, who serves as a member. (Jim will also take Kate's place on that committee.) The PSCRB has been asked by Vice President for Student Affairs Art Costantino to organize campus-wide information-sharing and opinion-gathering sessions on the issue of full arming of Police Services officers. A Web page is being created for the PSCRB that Kate wants to link to on the left navigation bar of Connections.

3. Discussion of potential campus implications should war with Iraq happen. The committee heard some history of Evergreen with previous wars from Lee, and agreed that certain steps could be addressed in anticipation of such an occurrence. This would include writing a statement from President Les Purce explaining why the college could not adopt a formal position on the war. The committee also explored ways of getting information to the campus as quickly as possible, believing, for instance, that setting up televisions in selected areas of the campus could be useful. This point raised the issue of computer use to access news services. Lee said that she is drafting a policy that takes into account recent developments at the state level about appropriate use of computers.

Given that Edie's legislative schedule through at least the next month makes it difficult for her to serve as co-chair, Lee suggested that John fill in for her.

The next meeting of the Communications Committee is scheduled immediately following the Management Breakfast on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 9:30 a.m. in the Board Room.
