SPECIAL NOTE
There is currently one full-time, overtime exempt, classified Performing Arts Technical Director position available in the Performing and Media Arts area of the Academic division on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College. The candidate pool established from this announcement may be used to fill comparable permanent, full-time, part-time and temporary vacancies for the next six months to one year.

POSITION PURPOSE
The Performing Arts Technical Director is responsible for the planning, supervision and implementation of the technical production process for the College’s performing arts program, including management of all technical resources, production spaces, budgets, technical staff and student work program.

NATURE AND SCOPE
The Performing Arts Technical Director reports to the Managing Director of Performing and Media Arts and works closely with her/him and with the faculty in planning student and faculty productions and the “Evergreen Expressions” performance/media art series.  The position is responsible for: independently solving technical problems as they arise; managing all the areas of theatrical production, including the costume and scene shops, the Experimental Theater (ET), Recital Hall and all other designated performing arts spaces in the Communications Building; managing the production budget and technical theater budgets for all academic productions; supervising technical staff for theater and production support, and student staff in the scene and costume shops and performance spaces; coordinating and managing the use of the performing arts production facilities with faculty and staff; recommending and implementing policies and procedures for facilities use and allocation of resources.  

COMPENSATION

  • Experience and training may be considered in salary placement;
  • Salary range is $3,293 to $4,322 per month of full time work;

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Theatre with a minimum of five years of academic and/or professional experience in technical direction; or, a Master’s Degree in Technical Theatre/Design with a minimum of three years of academic and/or professional experience in technical direction.

Candidates with training and experience in non-western or non-traditional performance, performance art or experimental theatre are urged to apply. Experience working within a diverse artistic environment and collaboration with artists and faculty of diverse races, genders and sexualities is also desired.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Production Coordination

  • Plan, oversee and implement all technical production aspects of the performing arts programs.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff and students to create and maintain production schedules and timelines and to allocate financial and technical staff resources for all productions.
  • Coordinate and approve all student scenic, lighting, properties and costuming designs.
  • Design and implement technical theater workshops for academic programs.
  • Coordinate the purchase of all materials needed for each production.
  • Supervise academic program students working on technical aspects of class productions.
  • Draft, or oversee the drafting of, all construction drawings as needed.
  • Attend production meetings for each production as needed.
  • Coordinate, supervise and approve all technical/safety aspects of each production, including rentals.
  • Coordinate and support the technical needs of presenting guest artists and performing groups.


Staff Supervision

  • Supervise, schedule and evaluate the staff costumer, master electrician and master carpenter.
  • Hire, train and supervise student staff positions, which may include: scenic carpenters, production shop assistants, scenic artists, lighting technicians, costume shop assistants, properties shop assistants, and student crew leads; create and maintain a schedule for the student staff.
  • Provide training on proper and safe use of all scene shop and theatrical equipment, including: all wood- and metal-working tools, lighting equipment, costume shop equipment, painting equipment and supplies, and fly systems and equipment, as well as lighting and scenery rigging procedures.
  • Develop daily and long-term job assignments for three full-time performing arts technical staff and student staff.
  • Develop and monitor institutional student positions, payroll and budget.


Facilities Management

  • Manage the ET, the Recital Hall and other designated performance spaces, production scene shop, costume shop, prop shop, welding shop and paint shop, and the scenery, costume, properties, lighting and tool storage areas.  Responsibilities include organizing, maintaining, inventory and housekeeping.
  • Supervise the construction, welding and painting of scenery.
  • Maintain/repair, or facilitate repair of, all scene shop equipment, including all wood- and metal-working tools, lighting, rigging, painting and sewing equipment, fly systems and stage machinery.
  • Supervise the rigging of all theater scenery, soft goods, lighting equipment, etc.
  • Supervise the set-up of the theater stage, seats, masking, sets, lighting and sound.
  • Purchase all lumber, steel, hardware, paint, fabric, lamps, gel and other general supplies for academic productions and general shop use.
  • Create and maintain a work schedule for all productions in the scene shop or ET, Recital Hall and other designated performance spaces.
  • Train and oversee all academic student work in the scene shop, costume shop and paint shop.
  • Coordinate all lighting equipment, scenery, costume or property rentals.
  • Monitor and enforce all safety aspects of the production scene shop and theatrical spaces.
  • Supervise multiple events in multiple venues simultaneously.


Administrative Duties

  • Plan production aspects of future academic, Evergreen Expressions, Senior Thesis, and independent productions in close consultation with faculty and Managing Director of Performing and Media Arts.
  • Maintain a production calendar for the ET, Recital Hall and other designated performance spaces.
  • Develop and monitor student time sheets and appropriate budgets for the theater area.
  • Review and approve staff work schedules and leave requests.
  • Research and facilitate the purchase of new stage equipment and tools as required.
  • Attend staff and Performing Arts Sub-Area meetings.


ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Facilitate support in sound design and operation, multimedia design and operation, stage management, properties and costume design and implementation, and make-up.
  • May occasionally be required to perform lighting design and coordinate lighting support for special events.
  • Stay current with new technologies and developments in the field of theatrical production.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of safety and health issues for the theater.
  • Working knowledge and demonstrated ability in scenery construction and design, lighting design and implementation, sound design and support, costume design, costume shop operations and scenic painting.
  • Working knowledge and ability to provide training on proper and safe use of all ET and production scene shop equipment, including:  all wood- and metal-working tools, lighting equipment, sewing machines, costume shop equipment and painting equipment, as well as lighting and scenic rigging procedures.
  • Experience in technical direction, scenic and lighting design, budget management, supervision and direction of work crews, scenic carpentry, scenic painting, and lighting rigging, focusing and operation.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision and to make sound and reasonable decisions independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and interact well with diverse cultures and across age, racial, ethnic, gender, class, social, sexual orientation, ability, religious and political differences.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with others in production planning and design.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of beginning work, and may be required to submit to a background check;
  • This position is assigned to part of the institution that is covered by a union shop provision of the Department of Personnel/Higher Education Division.  Therefore, new employees are required to pay dues to the Federation of State Employees within thirty (30) days of their hiring date.
  • Some evening/weekend work is required;
  • Must be capable of: working in a shop environment in which welding fumes, paint fumes and wood dust may be present; climbing latters; and lifiting heavy objects (up to forty pounds).
