There is currently one half-time overtime-eligible Career Counseling Specialist position available on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College. This position is exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules.

  • Salary is $1,505.50 to $1701.00 per month of part-time work.

The Career Counseling Specialist is part of a team of career development counselors who provide individual and group counseling sessions to assist students and alumni with career and lifework planning.

Under general direction, the position reports to the Director of the Career Development Center.  The work of the Career Development Center contributes to an integrated student advising process, assisting students and alumni in exploring and creating their academic experience, career pathways and life work. The philosophy of "life as career" guides the counseling, advising and programming of the center. The student-centered focus of this dynamic office provides daily opportunities to tap a counselor's flexibility and creativity.

The day to day work environment involves frequent sessions with students, one-on-one appointments, drop-ins, small group activities and competing schedule demands. Occasional evening and weekend work


  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years professional experience working in higher education, education, social services, or related setting.


  • Master’s Degree.
  • Professional experience working in Career Development in a higher education setting.


  • Provide comprehensive career and life work planning, counseling, job search assistance and graduate school advising to liberal arts and sciences students on an individual appointment, small group outreach and drop-in basis.
  • Support the mission and purpose of The Evergreen State College and the Career Development Center.
  • Coordinate the annual Graduate School Fair (Fall) and Career Fair (Spring).
  • Interpret skills, interests, and values assessment tools such as Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Campbell Interest and Skill Survey, and other assessment tools as needed.
  • Work in cooperation with staff, faculty, and students; participate in staff training, program planning, and scheduling.
  • Assist the Director in staff training, conducting staff meetings, program planning, and scheduling.
  • Provide graduate and professional school advising including pre med, law, business, and allied health
  • Develop and provide workshops for academic programs and the Career Development Center.
  • Assist the Director in coordinating recruitment activities throughout the year.
  • Create visibility for the Career Development Center through events, brochures, web, posters, announcements, and presentations.
  • Provide information and referrals, and maintain complete and accurate records of students seeking advising services.
  • Update and maintain current career resources for the Career Resource Library and web.
  • Assist the Director with faculty orientations and presentations, assessment activities, and report writing.
  • Participate in weekly case management and staff meetings and quarterly staff training retreats.
  • Participate in Student Affairs and college governance activities.
  • Participate in annual self-evaluation and program assessment.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise work-study students and career counseling interns.
  • Recruit, train, and lead the work of students, interns, and volunteers as needed.
  • Maintain off-campus contacts for the purposes of recruitment, retention, networking, and community outreach for students.
  • Collaborate with other units in SASS regarding retention and student success. 


  • Excellent one-on-one counseling skills.
  • Knowledge of career counseling and assessment, as well as student development theory.
  • Excellent classroom, workshop, or group facilitation skills.
  • Ability to organize, problem-solve, and multi-task with competing priorities, and work in a team oriented environment.
  • Commitment to liberal arts education.
  • Knowledge and understanding of The Evergreen State College educational philosophy, including the Five Foci and the Six Expectations.
  • Skill and ability in program planning.
  • Possess cultural competency and the ability to work effectively with people of diverse student populations.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to function both independently and collaboratively with staff, faculty, and community members.
  • Ability to understand and comply with College policies, the Social Contract, and regulations including FERPA.
  • Ability to understand various services available and refer students as needed.
  • Familiarity and comfort with various computer programs. Skill in database management, web, social media, and Microsoft Office Suite.


  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.

  • This position is assigned to part of the college that is covered by a union shop provision and a collective bargaining agreement.  Employees are required to pay an amount equal to the fees or dues required to be a member of the union to the Washington Federation of State Employees within thirty days of their date of hire.
