1.4: Residential Facilities

Facilities

Student maintenance workers are a key part of RAD and the services we provide to residents.  Resident Assistants will work closely and in collaboration with the student maintenance crews and leads throughout the year, including when on duty for emergency maintenance needs and programming that may require facilities' input.

Facilities Professional Staff
  • Mark Lacina, Assistant Director of Facilities: Supervises the program and directs with a broad vision of facilities and long term projects
  • Ray Ruiz, Building and Grounds Supervisor: Oversees facilities daily operations and the RM program.
  • Matt Lebens, Locksmith: Oversees keys and locks and coordinates our emergency responses and fire procedure coordination.
  • Steve Johnson, Residential Facilities HVAC Technician: Responsible for all things related to water and steam power.
Student Worker Program

We have one of the only facilities programs where the majority of the work is completed by student workers and supervised by student leads. Maintenance, grounds,  auxiliary, linen, payroll and purchasing positions are all filled by student staff and supervised by student leads. The student leads are responsible for developing and leading trainings as well as planning for their crew.

  • Student Facilities Lead
  • Maintenance Supervisor
  • Purchasing
  • Payroll / Office Assistant
  • Sustainability Coordinator
Residential Maintenance Program

Residential Maintenance (RM) is an on-call/live-in service for emergency facilities-related issues that occur after business hours. Common examples include: clogged toilets, fire alarm panel trouble, first aid, and handling of bio-hazardous materials. The RMS (Residential Maintenance Support) is a facilities on-call professional staff member which rotates weekly. The RMS will assist with large facility issues and provide direct support over the phone to the RD on Duty and RM.

Collaborating with Facilities

There are several ways in which Resident Assistants and Residential Facilities workers collaborate during the year.  It is an expectation that you work jointly with Residential Facilities for any program or community building event that may impact the facilities or physical landscape of a building or the campus landscape. This includes programs such as campus beautification events, gardening and hall decoration programs. The best person to contact is the Facilities Student Lead, who can be reached by calling (360) 867-6114 or by e-mail at resfacstulead@evergreen.edu.

Additionally, if your community struggles with sustainability efforts (e.g. properly sorting recyclable materials or composting) or you would like to do additional work to educate your residents about sustainability, you should contact the RAD Sustainability Coordinator. The Sustainability Coordinator is a great resource for information, ideas, and materials.

While on duty, you may be asked to respond to maintenance emergencies with the RM On Duty. During fall training you will be trained on how to assist the RM.  It is important that you respond quickly (most maintenance emergencies are time-sensitive and need urgent action to make sure the problem does not worsen), ask how you can help, and follow the instructions of the RM On Duty.
