4.3 Living-Learning Agreements

Within the first weeks of the quarter, Resident Assistants must meet with each suite, shared bathroom, apartment and/or modular unit to create a Living-Learning Agreement (LLA).  These agreements between suitemates and/or roommates ensure each resident will be held accountable to the cleaning and treatment of the common spaces or shared rooms, as well as sets expectations for how they will engage with one another and communicate with each other about the agreement.

During the first week of the term, you will take an LLA form to a living unit.  The form should be started only if everyone is present (it is useful to schedule ahead of time, especially for larger 6-person units).  The RA must follow up with those roommates that were not present to be sure they agree to the LLA.

It is your job to facilitate the process but not to set expectations for the residents.  Encourage each member to contribute and ensure there is true consensus.  Empower each person to clarify their living needs and expectations.  It is important the group also discusses how they will approach each other when a standard has not been met.

Living-Learning Agreements can be amended at any time and is not a binding contract.  However, it is a great tool for facilitate conversations that can prevent unnecessary conflict and miscommunication later in the term.
