7.3 Student Health & Counseling Services
The Health and Counseling Centers are available to all actively enrolled students who have paid the quarterly Student Health and Counseling Fee. The Student Health Center can see students for a wide range of health concerns and help to connect students with health insurance and refer to community providers when needed.
Common student health problems they treat include:
- Colds and flu
- Skin conditions
- Women’s health visits including birth control, reproductive health, STD testing, pregnancy testing, vaginal infection checks and yearly exams
- Medical management of depression and anxiety
- Vaccines
- Sports-related injuries
- Travel consultations
- Skin conditions
The Student Health Center also helps students connect to health resources in the community. Students who are unsure of available health care options in the Olympia community can consult the Student Health Center for a referral or more information. Please read the Student Health Center FAQ page for more information to share with your residents.
The Student Health Center is located at Seminar I 2110, the main floor of the Seminar I building, across the open breezeway from Police Services.
The Counseling Center | 867-6800 | http://www.evergreen.edu/health/The Counseling Center provides individual mental health counseling, related information, referrals, and support groups. Students who see a counselor in the Counseling Center may have individual sessions scheduled for up to 50 minutes at a frequency to be determined by the student and his or her counselor.
The Counseling Center works with students in exploring new approaches to the issues they are dealing with. This may include problem solving techniques, healthy decision making, and cognitive and behavioral strategies for coping and managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. These issues may include, but are not limited to:
- Depression
- Anger
- Anxiety, panic and/or phobias
- Relationships
- Life adjustment issues
- Grief and loss
- Abuse
- Etnic and Cultural Issues
- Eating disorders
- Stress management
- Alcohol and drug use
- Sexuality issues
Students who contact the Counseling Center may be given referrals or they may be scheduled for an intake appointment after completing some initial paperwork. The Counseling Center has daily walk-in hours available for students. Students may be referred to a TESC support group, the Health Center, another Evergreen office, a health care provider or support group in the community, or to a combination of the above. Various support groups generally begin and end each quarter and meet once a week, usually for an hour and a half. Referrals to the community are made in cases where students prefer to be seen off-campus, where the type of problem is not within the professional capacity or expertise of the Counseling Center staff, or when long-term therapy is indicated.
The Counseling Center, located in Seminar I Building Room 4130, maintains walk-in hours daily Monday - Friday for acute crisis support and regular hours for appointments.
Offering to walk a resident to the health and counseling center can be a good way to make sure they go to get the help they need and decrease any anxiety or stress about going to counseling. Walking with residents to the Counseling Center is a great way to normalize counseling and show support and care to your resident.
