Resident Director Work Schedule

Office Hours

Resident Directors are expected to keep consistent office hours during the academic year to ensure they are available to assist residents and their Resident Assistants. To maintain some consistency among staff member, the Resident Directors can opt to be in office hours Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. or 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.  During office hours, Resident Directors attend meetings, meet individually with Resident Assistants, prepare trainings, complete administrative tasks,  and meet with residents.

Duty Rotation

The Resident Director staff will divide up duty during the academic year as follows:

  • Each RD will be assigned to a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening that rotates during each week of the term
  • RDs will rotate weekend coverage, starting Friday at 4:30 p.m. and ending Monday at 8 a.m.

The RD on duty will have a 20-minute response time Sunday to Thursday until 10 p.m.  After 10 p.m., the RD on duty is expected to be back on campus for the duration of the night. On the Friday and Saturday the RD will have a 20 minute response time until 7 p.m. While on holiday duty, the RD on duty will have a 20 minute response time to any calls from dispatch and the duty crew. The expectation is that the RD will be reachable by cell phone and or landline.

During the summer term, the Resident Director staff will rotate on a week-long schedule.  Summer duty will begin on Monday at 4:30 p.m. and concludes the following Monday at 8 a.m. (except during open front desk hours). Resident Directors have a 20 minute response time during the summer and are expected to be reachable by the duty phone at all times while on-call.

Schedule Flexibility

Due to the nature of the Resident Director position, there is some flexibility in your work schedule.  If you were on duty the night before and experienced a late-hour crises, you can come in later if you need to get sleep.  It is important if you plan to come into work later that you communicate important information to the Assistant Director and other relevant parties before you go to bed.  This ensures professional staff members have the information they need to respond to students of concern or facilities issues when they come into the office in the morning.  Additionally, you can "flex" time appropriately.

Time can also be compensated for evening or weekend work commitments, such as advising student groups, required staff events and weekend events (with the exception of check in and closing weekend). Your Outlook Calendar must accurately reflect what time you are compensating and for what evening/weekend commitment.

Lastly, if you were on duty the weekend before, you are given the following Friday off. This does not need to be submitted to Human Resources - however, make sure your Outlook Calendar reflects you are out of the office.
