9.2a Staff Evaluation & Discipline

The student worker program at Residential and Dining Services is designed to help students develop useful skills and grow as individuals. As a Resident Director, you can assist in those efforts by helping student workers develop self-awareness about their strengths, skills, and knowledge. Student workers receive formal and informal evaluation of their job performance throughout the year by supervising staff members.

Staff Evaluations

Resident Assistants are formally evaluated at the end of Fall and Spring Term by their supervising Resident Director.  Each Resident Assistant completes a self-evaluation and an evaluation of their Resident Director.  The evaluation forms are available on the share drive under Evaluation Materials.  In addition to the formal written evaluation, Resident Directors should provide on-going feedback, both positive and constructive, to staff members throughout the year in order to improve performance, motivate staff members, and intervene early on with sub-standard performance.

Staff Discipline

The Resident Assistant position, like all student worker positions, provides an opportunity for students to develop new skills, grow as individuals, and become capable leaders.  Because the job is an educational process, you will witness a lot of progress and personal growth from the students you supervise, and, simultaneously, some questionable behavior or decisions.  As a supervisor, you must find a way to balance being patient with Resident Assistants as they adjust to a demanding job with holding staff accountable to expectations and addressing patterns of behavior that are unacceptable.

It is important for the Resident Director staff to be as consistent as possible with disciplining staff.  The Staff Disciplinary Procedures and Staff Disciplinary Matrix are offered to assist each Resident Director to appropriately and proportionately respond to staff behavior.  Every situation has unique circumstances that may inform how the Resident Director responds. It is advisable to use your best judgment and, whenever possible, consult the Assistant Director and fellow Resident Directors to maintain relatively consistent standards of addressing staff behavior.

Checklist for Exiting RAs (midyear)

If a Resident Assistant should resign or be terminated from the RA position, this checklist outlines the tasks to be completed in processing the staffing transition.

The RA should turn in:

  • RA Kit (Flashlight, markers, staplers, tape, etc.)
  • Red Safety Kits
  • RAD gear (Sweatshirt, jacket, t-shirt)
  • Administrative keys, room and mailbox keys with the Office Support Supervisor in the front office
  • Any other state materials acquired throughout the year (art supplies, etc.)

Other steps the RA should complete:

  • Check out with an RD to make sure all materials listed above have been returned, determine charges or need to re-stock if not
  • Send a resignation email stating that they are resigning their post effective immediately (unless they are terminated)
  • Still abide by all policies of RAD, the college, and the state, as they are now a resident. If they find themselves in violation of these policies the decision not to charge them for the period of time allowed for the RA to move out may be reversed.
  • Find a replacement for all duty shifts that need to be covered (if this can’t happen, the Supervising RD will)
  • Decide if they want to make an announcement to their peers at the next RA meeting, or if they would like the supervising RD to do so

The Supervising RD should:

  • Notify the Fiscal Technician of stop pay date
  • Determine meal plan stop date with the AD of Residential Life if in first year housing and communicate with the Fiscal Technician
  • Notify the Office Support Supervisor that there is a staffing change and that the RA should be checking out with an RD. Remove them from staff contact sheets and forward the updated information to professional staff and police services.
  • Notify all Professional RAD staff of the updated staff information via email
  • Remove the RA from any email distribution list
  • Find a replacement for any uncovered duty shifts  (if the RA hasn’t completed this task)
  • Notify staff of any extra duties that will take place now that the staff is shorthanded
  • Email the RA's community to notify them of their new RA and where they can access our services if needed
