9.2c Supervision Advice from Previous Resident Directors

Advice to Consider

Previous Resident Directors have recommended the following for supervising staff:

  • Set expectations with staff during your first meeting and allow the Resident Assistant staff to set expectations for you and each other at your first area meeting. Revisit these expectations often.
  • Define and set your personal boundaries.  Talk to staff members about when and how it is appropriate to contact you when you are not in the office or on-duty (e.g. texting, for emergencies only, never after 11 p.m. for non-emergencies)
  • Set aside time each week to planning activities and trainings for your area time meetings
  • Encourage Resident Assistants to address conflict with other RAs directly. Help them develop the skills to do so.
  • Create a structure that works for you for tracking completed programs and other RA responsibilities
  • Be specific when giving praise to Resident Assistants.
  • Check in with your Resident Assistants about their life balance, stress management, and health
