Celebration and Anticipation
In this issue, we celebrate the leadership and accomplishments of Les Purce as he prepares to wrap up his presidency.
As a trustee, I have worked with Les for many years, through serious challenges and major achievements. I have seen his creativity, passion, integrity, and diverse talents first hand as he has advocated for Evergreen students, faculty, and staff in the face of steep declines in state support, promoted the benefits of a liberal arts education and Evergreen’s distinctive model, and advanced the cause of public higher education regionally and nationally. His legacy is a college that is academically strong, well respected, and well positioned for the future.
On behalf of the trustees and the college, I extend our gratitude and deep appreciation.
There is more to honor and celebrate as well. In this issue you will read about alumni who demonstrate creativity in action through their professional work and service—from new video imaging technologies and local organic manufacturing to youth suicide prevention and the continuing contributions of Evergreen’s phage laboratory and research.
As for anticipation, we are including a brief introduction of Evergreen’s next president, George Bridges. George joins Evergreen on October 1, so we will provide you with more information about him in our next edition. For now, suffice it to say that we are extremely pleased with the selection and we are looking forward to having George leading the college during this exciting time.
Finally, I want to extend my thanks to you, our alumni and friends. Your support is more critical than ever and deeply appreciated.
Keith Kessler, Chair, Board of Trustees The Evergreen State College
