How do we harness energy from the wind? How do solar panels produce electricity? How do we make sense of numbers to describe these physical relationships? In this introductory-level program, renewable energy will be our entry point for exploring how algebra and physics explain the world around us. We will emphasize representations, reasoning, and problem solving. We will use the language of mathematics to describe and communicate important relationships between observations and measurements in physics and other fields of science.

Birds are among the most diverse vertebrates found on the earth. We will explore the causes of this incredible diversity through a well-rounded investigation of general bird biology, the evolution of flight (and its implications) and the complex ecological interactions of birds with their environments. This program has considerable field and lab components and students will be expected to develop strong bird identification skills, including Latin names, and extensive knowledge of avian anatomy and physiology.

Coral reef ecosystems are the among the most biodiverse locations on our planet and also support many different business opportunities. These are highly valued ecosystems in many tropical parts of the world, but they face a suite of different threats to their continued healthy existence. We will examine the biology and ecology of coral reef ecosystems and explore the possibilities for entrepreneurs to develop sustainable business endeavors.

Both art and science require close observation of the natural world and critical thinking about what you see. People have been making these close observations and analyses of animals, plants, and ecology for as long as people have been living in the Pacific Northwest. It has not been until relatively recently in our history that we have divided these activities into two separate disciplines. Despite this separation, certain Pacific Northwest animals—including salmon, ravens, and whales—have continued to capture the imagination of people in both disciplines.

(Olympia, Wash.)—Washington’s highest court travels to The Evergreen State College May 8 and 9, giving students and local citizens a front-row opportunity to watch how nine elected judges interpret the state’s constitution on behalf of all the people of Washington.
Sponsored by the Geoduck Student Union, highlights of the court’s visit will include a public forum and official court hearings that will be open to the public.
