Evergreen receives nearly $5.8 million in GEAR UP funding

(Olympia, Wash.) The Evergreen State College’s Student and Academic Support Services department will receive a $5,760,000 six-year GEAR UP grant from the Department of Education.

GEAR UP – an acronym for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs – has been an Evergreen tradition since 2002. GEAR UP grants are designed to increase the rates of college attendance by working with students beginning in middle school. The national program is focused on reducing poverty by supporting students’ efforts to prepare for college and encouraging retention in schools.

Lynda Barry Tells us "What it Is"

Cartoonist and writer Lynda Barry, an alumna of The Evergreen State College is on tour for her new book, “What It Is.” She’s best-known for “Ernie Pook’s Comeek,” which was first published in the Cooper Point Journal at Evergreen.

She is appearing at 8 p.m. Wednesday at The Evergreen State College Experimental Theater, 2700 Evergreen Parkway N.W., Olympia.

2008 Opus Prize Winner Speaks on the Lives of the Dalit (Untouchable) Caste

Krishnamal Jagannathan, founder of "Land for Tillers' Freedom," has devoted her life to the Dalit ("Untouchable") Caste in Tamil Nadu, India. She will receive the 2008 International Opus Prize in Seattle on November 18. The Opus Prize is a $1 million faith-based humanitarian award and two $100,000 awards given annually to recognize unsung heroes of any faith tradition, anywhere in the world, solving today’s most persistent social problems.

She will speak 7 p.m., Thursday, November 13, in the Recital Hall, Comm. Bldg.

Campus living check-in and check-out can generate a great amount of waste, and RAD is working to make these processes more sustainable.

Housing applications have been online since Fall 2008 check-in to reduce paper. We are continuing to reduce paper use during this process by increasing materials and communication that are accessible online.

Waste Reduction

The Evergreen State College is taking steps, large and small, to minimize landfill waste. Through our composting and recycling programs, and student run programs like the Free Store, our campus is moving towards a zero waste philosophy by 2020.

There are four Waste Collection Sites in Residential Campus located in the freshman housing (A,B,C & D buildings) courtyard, in front of E & F buildings, in the Soup Loop, and in the MODs. A guide to recycling just about any material you can think of is available on the Evergreen Facilities Recycling page. Please dispose of your waste properly and help Evergreen move toward a Zero-Waste Campus!
