The Outdoor Program

Basic Mountaineering Class

This climb is open to all who have completed the Intro to Crevasse rescue. This is a two-day, overnight course which will get participants out onto a glacier as well as experience steep snow travel and cold weather camping at 9,000 feet. The group will hike Glacier Basin and ascend the Inter Glacier to Camp Schurman on the east side of Mount Rainier. After an early rise we will spend the morning practicing crevasse rescue and glacier travel and hike out that afternoon to be back at evergreen by 9:00 p.m. No prior mountaineering experience necessary, however, this is a physically strenuous course with long days carrying packs at higher altitudes; participants should train accordingly and be in good physical shape prior to the trip. Gear list will be forthcoming and available at the TOP office in the CRC.
