The Outdoor Program

Intro To Mountaineering

As winter approaches and the mountains start wearing their white coats, join TOP for a four session introduction to safe and effective mountain travel techniques. On Wednesday October 9th and Wednesday October 16 there are two classroom sessions covering the basics of trip planning and other important skills. Then on October 12 and the following weekend, October 19th-20th we will head to the Olympic Mountains north of Olympia to learn and practice fundamentals in the field.

October 12 - This ‘shakedown’ climb gives students the opportunity to have a fun saturday out in the Olympics as well as measure a baseline for fitness as the cold winter (read indoor training) season approaches. Depending on conditions TOP will take the group to Mt. Rose or Mt. Ellinor.

October 19-20 - Students will work with TOP staff during the Wednesday classroom to select the objective for the trip based on weather and current conditions. Over the weekend the group will travel to the selected destination and spend two days practicing skills and, conditions allowing, summiting their objective.

*** Please only sign up if you can commit to all four sessions, this allows for a much better group dynamic and reduces gaps in your resulting knowledge base ***
