The student should demonstrate unusual diversity in interests and a commitment to the environment and to humane and effective solutions to environmental problems. In addition, the applicant should demonstrate that he/she acts on, rather than merely thinks about problems and their solutions and that he/she maintains a physical fitness regimen.

- A narrative that explains this "piece of self" (to the extent that it may require explanation) and addresses the issues in the four criteria above. This narrative need not be written. It can, for example, be produced on audio, videotape, CD/DVD and should include a discussion of plans for the future (vocation/career), plans for the use of the scholarship and a list of extracurricular activities.
- Three letters of recommendation written within the past year, one each from two members of the faculty or one member of the faculty and a non-faculty mentor, plus one from a peer.
