Plato Royalty Funds

Royalties received from the PLATO computer-aided instruction materials developed at Evergreen during the early eighties have been used to endow equipment, training and an annual lecture series on computer-related topics.  Each year the academic deans are to notify faculty of the amount available for both the equipment and public lecture series in the coming academic year and request proposals. The call for proposals is

  • Equipment Grants: The Plato Royalty Equipment Grants will focus on supporting projects that strengthen and enhance curriculum incorporating the use of computer technology. Awards are for computing technology (hardware and software) and/or for developing cutting edge applications of computing technology. Until all funds are exhausted, annual awards of up to $10,000 are made for computer equipment and software to support innovative teaching. Applications are requested and reviewed once per year by the Plato Royalties Committee, generally during winter quarter. For a list of past recipients, refer to the Plato Royalties history page.

The current Call for Proposals Announcement and Criteria document for the equipment grant is now available for the 2009-2010 academic year.
  • Plato Lecture Series (a.k.a. Cutting Edge Symposium): An endowed program that supports an annual guest speaker series on a topic concerning computers and technology. Some themes of past series have been computer reliability and SDI, computers in the arts, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and the Internet.  Approximately $5,000 is available for each annual series. Each year the academic deans are to notify faculty of the amount available for the public lecture series in the coming academic year and request proposals. If more than one proposal is received, the deans will publicize and hold an open meeting at which the proposals will be presented and discussed by any interested faculty and students. The deans will then select a proposal for the coming academic year (and a faculty coordinator for that year's lecture series)

The current Call for Proposals Announcement and Criteria document for the lecture series is now available for the 1009-2010 academic year.
