Summer Institute on Writing & Teaching Native Cases
June 20-23, 2011
The Evergreen State College
The Enduring Legacies Project
Olympia, Washington
For the past six years the Enduring Legacies Project at The Evergreen State College has been developing Native Case Studies around contemporary issues in Indian Country. This interactive, interdisciplinary teaching and learning approach has been enormously successful with students and faculty. The unique Native perspective presented in well- researched reality-based cases offers opportunities for cross-cultural learning and a greater understanding and awareness of Indian issues. Case teaching is an engaging method that can be adapted to students at any education level. Through role play, debate, group discussion and collaboration students develop critical thinking and analysis abilities as well as problem solving and decision making skills.
This four day Summer Institute introduces participants to the case study approach and the resources in the Enduring Legacies Native Cases Initiative. Participants will participate in case discussions which will model a variety of learning strategies, and learn how to use these cases in their classrooms or for professional development.
