Tribal Program Policy for Attendance, Makeup Work and Late Work

Program faculty strive to be consistent from site-to-site in our policies on these matters, and with the approval of the program's Advisory Council, we have adopted the following policy:

The expectation is that all students will attend all weeknight and weekend classes, from beginning to end, and turn in all assignments on time. In reality, the faculty recognize that emergencies, severe illnesses and hospitalizations do occur. In the spirit of flexibility, although it creates additional work, we have traditionally offered opportunities for students to make up missed class time by completing makeup work. In order to receive full credit for each quarter, you must account for missed class time and all missing assignments. Students who fall short in this regard may jeopardize scholarships in future quarters.

Attendance

  • If class is missed, any work due that night or work done in class must be turned in by the next class, or no credit for the work will be given.
  • All absences must be made up in order to receive full credit for the quarter. In addition, coming late or leaving early by more than a few minutes should also be made up.
  • Experience shows that the more class time missed, the harder it is to earn full credit for the quarter. We've missed learning from you, and you've missed learning from others.
  • A student who misses 25% or more of class time should not expect to receive full credit.

Assignments

  • Turning work in late causes extra work for faculty, misses the point of consecutive learning assignments, interferes with preparedness for class, and impacts other students. Assignments are due when stated.
  • If you start to fall behind, please reach out for help immediately by talking to fellow students and your primary faculty.

Makeup work

  • Makeup work will only be given for illness, emergencies and required work-related absence; makeup work will not be given for other reasons.
  • Makeup work has to be approved in advance by the appropriate faculty.
  • Makeup work that is most appropriate relates to our theme, our work, and constitutes new learning for the student.
  • Makeup work is due within 1 week of the missed time unless other arrangements are agreed to with the faculty.

In summary, faculty policy on these matters is as follows: "We are flexible, but not lenient; lack of planning by a student does not make an emergency for faculty."
