This program introduces multitrack audio production techniques, various applications, history, and aesthetics. Students will explore elements of studio acoustics and the principles of sound behavior in an enclosed space by using Evergreen's recital hall and orchestral halls. Fall quarter will focus on the API 1608 console and Pro Tools for recording productions. Students will develop critical listening skills on how acoustic treatments play an essential part in sculpting music's overall sound aesthetic and emotional goal. Students will learn to read and interpret advanced studio signal flow of mixers, spec sheets, analog, and digital recording chains, gain stages, and sound transduction from source to acoustic reproduction. The course will also introduce students to microphones and various application techniques.

Students will learn to apply multiple stereo recording techniques and gain critical listening skills by examining the immersive and realistic reproduction of spatial recording approaches. Students will also do reading, listening exercises, research, and written homework based on the weekly focus material. Students will work in groups and are encouraged to record themselves and others. Studios come equipped with basic instrumentation such as drum kits, amplifiers, and grand pianos. By the end of the course, students will understand principal signal flow and symbols, operate a multitrack session, apply microphone techniques, analyze the sonic variations of sound reproduction, and provide basic troubleshooting in audio studio productions.
