Acting Workshop
Summer 2017 quarter (First Session)
Taught by
theatre, opera, film, performance studies
In this 8-credit summer class, students will develop or improve on fundamental acting skills, such as how to play strong and dynamic action, how to live truthfully in imaginary circumstances, and how to incorporate essential vocabulary into every aspect of their work. Students will study text analysis, ranging from Shakespeare to modern playwrights. We will develop strong rehearsal techniques and methods for breaking down a scene into dynamic units of action. Along with scene study, a monologue for auditioning will be required. Students will work on how to make the best use of their voice and physical skills in creating a character. In addition to five Saturdays, there will be substantial out of class rehearsals and and an online component that includes working on plays and acting texts, seminars, as well as critical writing and screening of films and documentaries. Wear comfortable clothes for movement and prepare to explore “play” in every sense of the word. The program will include a field trip to Seattle to attend a live performance.
