Contemporary Issues in Indigenous Art
Summer 2017 quarter (Second Session)
Taught by
The twenty-first century has witnessed a resurgence in expressions of art and creativity from Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and First Nations artists as well as indigenous peoples from around the Pacific Rim. We'll conduct an overview of the effects of colonization on indigenous peoples’ cultural rights, and the expansion of tribal cultural sovereignty on artistic expression. Students will learn about the work of prominent indigenous artists working in two- and three-dimensional media and will have the opportunity to profile an indigenous artist of their choosing. This course will explore topics affecting indigenous arts, including the role of museums and arts institutions, art movements, cultural appropriation, mascots, repatriation and more.
