Business, Nonprofits and Personal Finance
NEW
Fall 2017 and Winter 2018 quarters
Taught by
In this program, students will explore economic and social issues from a business and finance perspective. Students will be guided in an examination of their own financial lives. Higher education, in particular, will provide our framework of exploration.
What is the history of funding for higher education? How do various economic, social, and cultural models impact funding and society? What are the relationships between private, public, and non-profit business models? What is the role of personal finance? What about fundraising, grants, scholarships, and philanthropic models? What are the related issues of social justice, equity, access, and political advocacy? How do individuals, families, organizations, and communities—in diverse cultures and societies—build systems of community service, altruism, and gift giving? What are alternative models of funding in our society?
The program will include lectures, seminars, workshops, films, and guest speakers. Students will participate in collaborative projects and research, and learn from a variety of community leaders. Students will build applicable skills in finance and economics, business, writing, communication, research, leadership, and fieldwork.
In the fall, students will develop critical reading, writing, and research skills. They will write personal and academic/research essays, conduct interviews, and do group research projects and presentations. In the winter, they will do field studies and research, visit the legislature, write feature articles and persuasive essays, and do group projects and presentations.
