Singing together in person is not yet safe, unfortunately. Therefore, this course will focus on developing students' individual vocal skills until we can return to rehearsing and performing specific repertoire in a later quarter. No auditions are necessary, and singing solo is never required. In our synchronous classes, we will work together on specific exercises to develop strong breath support, clear tone production, and a wide pitch range. Outside class time, students will read about and write reflections on voice work; and each students will prepare a final project, which can be either a solo vocal performance or a study of vocal music that they individually frame and present.
To successfully participate in this course students will need access to a quiet, private place where you can practice voice exercises without inhibition, including the ability to lay on the floor, a reliable device for internet access (something more robust than a cell phone is desirable), and reliable internet service. Students should expect to spend 3.5 hours in synchronous learning each week using zoom and canvas. Students will have access to alternatives to synchronous (in person or remote) participation if conditions require.
