Meter
Fall 2017 quarter
Taught by
Meter is the measure and the pattern of creative endeavor. Measurement and pattern also form the basis for identification and exploration in math and science. Whether it is the rhythm of a piece of spoken word or literary poetry, or the pulse of music, or the patterns generated by a function, creativity in both the humanities and the sciences is often metered, measured, and constrained by working with patterns that have already been established and by searching for new patterns to provide inspiration and insight.
In this one-quarter program, we will explore categories of patterns, how we recognize and create them, and how patterns serve as both container and constraint to creativity. Humans are pattern seekers. Patterns are models of how we think, focus, and make meaning in our lives and make sense of the world around us. For example, rhythm in poetry is often dependent on feet and meters, while inputs and outputs is the basis of mathematical patterns. The value of patterns is also apparent in studying the disciplined thinking by those who have been successful in our fields of study or careers. We will use creative modes of inquiry from mathematics and poetry to explore patterns, exercise the brain, and further our skills in both quantitative and qualitative reasoning, manipulation of functions, recognition of patterns, and critical analysis.
This program is for students who have a good foundation in mathematics and/or poetry, and want to do at least intermediate-level work in one or both of those fields. For example, some students might create interesting visualizations of mathematical patterns. Other students might use patterns to heighten the meaning and aesthetics of their spoken word and literary pieces. This program will help students strengthen their skills in critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and the creative process. Activities will include lectures, workshops, seminars, guest speakers, and field trips.
