2020 Commencement Guest Speaker Stephanie Coontz

Stephanie Coontz taught history and family studies at Evergreen from 1975 until her retirement in 2012, and still serves as an Evergreen Resource Faculty. She is also Director of Research and Public Education at the Council on Contemporary Families. Her eight books on marriage and family life include The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap (revised 2016), and Marriage, A History: How Love Conquered Marriage, which was cited in the US Supreme Court decision on marriage equality. She is proudest of co-editing American Families, A Multicultural Reader with two of her Evergreen students.

Coontz is a frequent guest columnist for the New York Times and has been published in every major national newspaper (see www.stephaniecoontz.com). She is a frequent radio and TV guest, including appearances on the Colbert Report and Adam Ruins Everything. Recent awards include The Stanley Cohen Distinguished Research Award from the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, The Work-Life Legacy Award from the Families and Work Institute, and an honorary doctorate from Muhlenberg College.. She has also received the Council on Contemporary Families first-ever (and only) "Visionary Leadership" Award and an American Academy of Pediatrics for her "outstanding contributions to the field of child development."  She currently serves as an advisor to MTV for its anti-bias campaign.
