Farewell to Founding Faculty Le Roi Smith III
Le Roi “Smitty” Smith III passed away in December 2017 at age 71. A founding faculty member, Smith taught at Evergreen from 1971 to 1981, with a dual appointment as psychology faculty and counseling center staff member who rotated in periodically as its director.
Post-Evergreen, Smith worked in human resources management and as equal opportunity officer for the Port of Seattle. In 1997 Smith emigrated to Vancouver, B.C., where he taught for 14 years at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s School of Business.
His family said Smith was lifelong learner with a passion for music, electronics, film, and photography. Former Evergreen President Les Purce, one of Smith’s longtime friends, described him as “a scholar and social activist who was deeply committed to social justice and the power of education to build a better society.” Purce added, “He was my brother and I will miss him.”
