Substance Free Housing | The Evergreen State College

Substance Free Housing

The substance-free floor offers additional support for first year students who have made a conscious choice not to engage in substance use (alcohol, marijuana, other drugs). Individuals may choose this floor based on personal or family history with substance abuse and addiction, personal or religious convictions, or for any other reason. In this community, residents will find less peer pressure to use substances and more support in remaining sober.

To be considered for Substance Free Housing, students must submit an application expressing their interest. As part of the application you may be asked to have a conversation with a Resident Director.

Resident Expectations:

  • Participate in the creation of a Living Learning Agreement (LLA) with all roommates by the end of the first week of the quarter, facilitated by a Resident Assistant (RA).
  • Participate in the creation of a document outlining community expectations with all members of the community by the end of the second week of the quarter. This document will begin establishing community norms and desires.
  • Refrain from engaging in the use of alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs while a resident of the community both on and off of the floor.
  • As all residents in this community have made a personal choice not to engage with substances, if individuals struggle to uphold their commitment to this choice they may be asked to move to a different floor.
  • As RAD works to support each resident in their academic pursuits, members of this community may be asked to engage with appropriate campus resources

Programs/Outreach
As a community of residents, partner with RAD Services and your RA to plan one educational, social, and/or service-related program per quarter to be advertised to the entire residential community in order to promote healthy lifestyle choices.

Participation
Our goal of creating intentional, supportive environments for students around remaining substance free depends on residents’ level of participation, feedback and leadership within this community. With ongoing input, effective communication, and active participation, we can keep this positive momentum going for future residents.
