Afternoon Sessions

  • Explore Problem Solving: Cultivating Creativity for Community Problem Solving

Positive social change, both large and small, happens all the time. It's not magic, nor do we fully understand it. Activists and social entrepreneurs—often with the assistance of online technology—have shown remarkable creativity in their response to complex social and environmental issues. For this discussion we have invited several innovators to help us explore new ways to understand and address shared problems. We will look at new opportunities for “ordinary citizens” to be engaged in this type of work and the role of higher education, particularly Evergreen, in supporting it.

  • Explore Public Health: Health Inequities: False Choices and True Consequences

We know that all people are not equally likely to live long, healthy lives. In fact there are systematic differences in health between different populations, based on social class, race, gender, education, and place of residence, among other factors. What accounts for these systematic differences or inequities? How important is access to quality healthcare? Does personal behavior change how healthy we are? How has the presence of underlying inequities affected the nature of relationships between communities, researchers, and clinical providers? This workshop will include a lecture, but time will also be spent on both small group and whole group discussion. Come to this workshop to offer your experience, your point of view, and your questions about how we get, and stay, healthy.

  • Explore Social Movements: Activism and Advocacy

How can we best harness our community’s power and creativity to effectively fight for change within the legislative process? In this highly interactive workshop you will practice articulating your passion into an issue campaign that is resilient enough to navigate the legislative process. By learning to combine community networking, progressive messaging, and a bird’s-eye view of our political system, participants will leave with a better understanding of long-haul organizing and the role you can play on the issues that matter most.

  • Explore Research: Evergreen Faculty and Students Research at Mount St. Helens

Following the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, forests and streams in the region were returned to "a blank slate” underlain by volcanic ash and debris flows. Dylan Fischer (Forest Ecology) and Abir Biswas (Earth Science) and their students have been studying the recovery of forest ecosystems and soil development processes in the Tephra-fall zone in clear-cut and old growth sites. Carri LeRoy (Stream Ecology) and her students have been studying stream processes in the blast zone of Mount St. Helens. We will discuss our findings thus far and the ways we have incorporated this research site into our teaching and work with our Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) students. We welcome discussion on our work at Mount St. Helens, as well as our other research activities and how they are being incorporated into Evergreen’s curriculum.
