The Communications Laboratory Building

Lockers

Free service

Lockers are available to all students free of charge. Locks are provided. 

Lockers are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the COM and are available in a variety of sizes from small lockers to hold bags and personal items to larger lockers for storing media carts and other large items.

Musical Instruments and Props

Checkout catalogs, eligibility and making requests

Musical instruments and props are available for student use. Musical instruments cannot leave the COM Building and rehearsal space must be scheduled for use.

Eligibility 

  • All currently enrolled undergraduate Evergreen students can check-out equipment for academic use. The use of the equipment/instrument(s) must be related to an academic project, performance, or study generating academic credit for the quarter used.
  • Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) may use equipment for group activities.
  • For instruments and other specialty equipment, you may have to demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of care.

Requesting Items 

  • Complete the COM Checkout Request form. Include items and catalog #s. 
  • Processing requests may take up to one week. Please plan ahead. 
  • After receiving requests staff will confirm academic needs or student group activities with faculty and staff. 
  • Once requests are processed, an email will be sent regarding approval for use and further instructions.

Rehearsal and Practice Space

How to book a space

COM spaces are available to all students as needed for rehearsal and practice space. Students checking out equipment or instruments should plan ahead and schedule practice space as many items are not available for use outside the COM. 

To book space in the COM, complete the COM Room Request Form. For use of the COM after hours, fill out a COM Late Night Access form.

COM provides large venues for a range of academic and public events, including dance, musical, and theatrical performances. Spaces marked with an * can be booked and used for events. 

To schedule rehearsal and practice space, complete the COM Room Request form. To schedule event space, complete the COM Event Request. Any use of space after operating hours requires a completed COM Late Night Access form.

Theater and Dance

Hall, studios and rehearsals

Recital Hall, COM 107*

The Recital Hall is a space acoustically designed for music recitals. It is also used for drama, dance, film and lecture presentations. It seats 200, has a state-of-the-art lighting system, and 7.1 surround sound. The room has a large projection screen, playback system and audio recording facility. A grand piano can be provided for music performances.

Performance and Production Studio, COM 110*

A multi-use space, seating up to 150 students.  It features exceptional acoustics and has an adjacent audio control room, a moderate stage space, and three shallow stepped risers accommodating lectures, rehearsals, audio recording and performance. A grand piano is also included in the space.

Dance Studio, COM 209*

The Dance Studio has a world-class sprung-wood floor and ample wall-mounted mirrors that can easily accommodate up to 75 dancers. It has a fixed lighting grid and features a full audio and video playback system. The space can be configured for performance and can hold an audience of up to 60 people. A grand piano is included in the space. No street shoes are allowed on the wood floor.

Dance Rehearsal, COM 210

A multi-use space ideal for movement and dance rehearsal. This space features ballet bars and wall-mounted mirrors.

Performance Studio, COM 332*

This exceptionally flexible Performance Studio was designed as a mini-black-box style space with fixed lighting grid and wall-mounted mirrors. It is ideal for small student-run productions and can seat up to 60 audience members.​

Performance Rehearsal, COM 335

This Performance Rehearsal space is located next door to the COM 332 Performance Studio. Not only can it be used as a green room during performances, it is also ideal for movement and music rehearsals.  It comes with built-in AV and has portable tables available if used as a seminar space.

Green Rooms, COM 121/122*

Located adjacent to the COM 107 Recital Hall these green rooms come with a large dressing area, waiting area, and include a shower. An upright piano is included in the COM 122 Green Room for vocal rehearsal.

Lounge/Meeting Space, COM 307

The lounge is also ideal as a meeting space or for large potlucks, with a fully-equipped kitchen attached. 

Lounge/World Music Space, COM 355

Located in the far corner of the 3rd floor near the faculty offices. This space is ideal for a break-out space or simply to find a quite space to study. Some quarters this space is reserved for music faculty to introduce students to a variety of multi-cultural musical instruments such as the Gamelan.

Design Lab, COM 408

The Design Lab occupies the entire 4th Floor. This space is equipped to host a multitude of programs to include Media Arts and Visual Arts. It contains drafting and cutting tables, film screening, critique wall, work area with multiple sinks, and lockers, to name just a few of the resources available. When the curtains are open, it has a fantastic view of the campus.

Audio Recording and Music Technology

Control rooms, multitrack studio, tech labs and rehearsal

Audio Control Room, COM 111A

For the COM 110 Performance and Production Studio. COM 111A serves as the control room, with COM 110 as a tracking room. The control room has an API 1608 console, a Mac Studio with Universal Audio Apollo interface, as well as a limited amount of rack equipment and an Otari MX-5050 8-track 1/2" tape machine. The computer supports multiple DAWs, including Pro Tools and Ableton Live.

Audio Control Room, COM 212A

For the COM 107 Recital Hall. COM 212a serves as the control room, with COM 107 as a tracking room.  The control room has an API 1608 console, a Mac Studio with Universal Audio Apollo interface, as well as a limited amount of rack equipment and an Otari MX-5050 8-track 1/2" tape machine. Music Rehearsal, COM 117

Located next to our cutting-edge Multitrack Studio, this music performance and rehearsal space allows for advanced audio recording and post-production. Variable sound dampening makes this room ideal for a variety of musical styles in addition to other types of presentations to a live audience of up to 50. This room features full audio and video playback.

Advanced Multitrack Studio, COM 118/119

The Advanced Multitrack Recording Studio in COM 118 is our advanced analog/digital audio studio. This is adjacent to and connected with the COM 119 tracking room. This studio is centered around a 32 channel Rupert Neve Designs 5088 console, with an Ampex MM1200 16-track 2" tape machine, Otari MX-5050 8-track 1/2" tape machine, and Universal Audio Apollo interfaces, with a Mac Studio running Pro Tools and Ableton Live. It also includes a wide selection of analog and digital signal processors. It has its own recording space including an isolation booth, piano, and other musical instruments.

Music Technology Labs, COM 343, 344, 346, 347

Electronic Media staff support and teach in a broad range of analog and digital music technology facilities in the Communication Building. Evergreen's Music Technology facilities are well-equipped with a wide variety of modern and vintage analog synthesizers and gear as well as cutting-edge digital audio workstations and plug-ins.

Beginning-level students enrolled in Introduction to Electronics in Music work in the COM 343 and COM 344 Music Technology Labs, while students enrolled in Electronics in Music are also able to work in the more advanced Hybrid lab in COM 346 and Hybrid suite in COM 347. COM 344 also includes a piano.

Media Loan circulates a wide range of professional level audio equipment to support both field work and work in the various labs. They also are responsible key checkouts and some scheduling of the various facilities.

Film and Animation Studio

2D/3D, editing suites and screening room

2D and 3D Animation Studios, COM 309, 310

Evergreen's emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching and learning has led students to create unique animated works that are experimental in content and form. In the full-time curriculum animation is taught in interdisciplinary programs in conjunction with dance, music, performance, religious and ritual studies, visual art, math, physics, literature, social studies, history and natural history. Depending on faculty placement it is also taught with film, video, and media history and theory.

Film Editing Suites, COM 325 A,B,C,D

Film post-production facilities are located in COM 325A,B,C,D. 16 mm film editing options at Evergreen include bench editing, flatbed editing, and home edit kits (which can be checked out through Media Loan).

COM 326 Advanced Screening Room

This room seats 48 and is used for media programs to screen films and student projects. It features a 16mm EIKI Projector as well as a high definition digital projector.

Seminar spaces

Seminar Space, COM 308, B, E

COM 308 Media Classroom can support a multitude of classes and can hold up to 50 students. Not only is it fully equipped with AV support but has two adjacent seminar spaces that hold 25 for breakout spaces. It also comes with a piano.

Media Classrooms, COM 320, 323

Identical media classrooms large enough to fit up to 50 students in each space. They come fully equipped with AV support.  Excellent spaces for large seminar programs.

Piano Practice

Piano Practice Rooms, COM 202, 203, 204

The COM has three piano practice spaces located on the 2nd floor for students to use on a first-come, first-serve basis. These rooms can be used by students college-wide.

Special Access Piano Room and Voice Lab, COM 205

The Special Access Piano and Voice Lab is available with faculty approval for advanced piano practice and voice. Along with a piano, the space has a computer equipped with Singing Coach 5 for students wanting to improve their vocal skills.
