About Latinx and Latin American Studies
Latinx Studies and Latin American Studies are two distinct but interrelated fields. Latinx Studies focuses on the diverse historical and contemporary experiences of Latinxs that reside in the United States. Latin American Studies focuses on the cultures and histories of countries and communities geographically situated south of the Mexico-U.S. border.
You will study each of these interdisciplinary fields through curricular offerings in the El Camino (Latinx Studies, Latin American Studies, and Multilingual Education) Path. Programs in Latinx Studies often focus on the ways socioeconomic, educational, and political conditions (such as migration and immigration) impact Latinx cultural wealth, representation, and identity.
Latin American Studies usually combine intensive study of Spanish language with study of history, literature, film, and intersectional feminist studies focused on countries in Latin America.
Interested in these fields? You may even have the opportunity to study abroad in Mexico or Nicaragua and/or engage in community-based projects and internships with local organizations that serve Latinx communities.
