Evergreen’s Shelton Promise Program compliments other aid programs while addressing gaps.
The Evergreen State College aims to remove financial barriers that inhibit students from attending a four-year college directly from high school. Evergreen's Shelton Promise Program will offset any tuition costs that might remain after applying federal and state scholarship grants, offer a need-based grant that can offset living expenses, and provide on-campus advising dedicated to helping students navigate college. These strategies of reducing administrative challenges and adding targeted support have been identified by the Washington Student Achievement Council and other researchers as effective in helping students enroll and complete their college degrees.
Evergreen is dedicated to ensuring college is rigorous, accessible, and affordable for all students. The ambitions inherent in the program reflect the college’s commitment to clear away obstacles to learning.
Shelton Promise Funding
After other aid programs are applied toward tuition, the program fills in any funding gaps. This program and others like it across the state receive legislative support because about 70 percent of Washington’s family-wage jobs require post-secondary education. Yet not enough students are graduating to meet current and future workforce needs.
