This program will be an exploration of games as educational and community-building tools. How might we use play to reinscribe the act of learning with meaning that it is not solely bound by the classroom or academic systems, but is rather a lifelong collaborative act of meaning-making? Each week we will explore a new framework for communal learning, we will problem pose and solve, encourage skill development, and allow for identity exploration. Students will familiarize themselves with the language, principles, and tools of teaching, developing over the course of ten weeks the foundations of their personal identity as an active and engaged learner, teacher, and community member. Alongside these pedagogical studies, we will be playing and analyzing games to better understand how interactive and collaborative art mediums can act as a transformational space for embedded learning goals. Students will synthesize these simultaneous studies in hands-on projects wherein they will use pedagogical principles as inspiration for designing their own games.
