This class is designed for all students that write fiction--short stories, long stories, novels, or hybrid genres of writing that include fiction--and want to share work, give and receive feedback, practice editing techniques and draft revisions. During this time together, there will be writing prompts and assignments to generate work to be workshopped (although students can use prior work per faculty approval). Workshop is a formal mode of teaching and learning and for purposes of this course, will follow a rubric that situates work within the realms of the Medicine Wheel (body, heart, mind, and spirit) to uncover the essence of the stories. Students are expected to have their work ready (printed copies) and have read and reviewed their peers' work by all due dates. Fiction writers across any genre (mystery, horror, literary, science fiction, romance, etc.) are welcomed.
We will have workshops and two generative writing times in class each week. Workshops will be in small groups, as well as an opportunity for all class workshopping. This is a fiction writing intensive course that requires timely participation and investment in the learning community. The culmination of this course will result in a student fiction portfolio of work, a 'zine/anthology of student's work, and a "public reading." Class is in person on Thursdays, 1pm - 4pm and students will attend 1-2 community readings of their choosing (outside of class).
