Creative Writing: Historical Fiction, Romance, & Horror is designed for students interested in reading and crafting stories that defy prescribed genres and incorporate multiple genres to tell a particular story. In this course, we will begin by deeply engaging with the literary work, Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Canas. Through reading reflections, canvas discussions, creative writing prompts and free writes, and seminars, students will explore how culture, tradition, war, and love contribute to the past colliding with the future to create this multi-layered story. In the second half of the quarter, students will draft and workshop (with peer partners) their own creative fictional works. This is a reading and (creative) writing intensive course. All are welcome. Class meets on Thursdays 1pm - 4pm.
