Creative Writing: The Stories That Guide Us explores finding strength through storytelling. Writing our experiences is how we find our way through and into the "other side." We will examine the craft of memoir and personal narrative through readings by established writers and our peers, writing prompts, writing assignments, and craft workshops. Students will experiment with lyric and hybrid forms to find, or expand, their narrative voice and style. What happens when we look for strength and guidance in the stories that came before us? Mythologies, lores, and legends can offer lessons that might lend themselves to our own personal challenges. Students will also work with the braided form of storytelling, weaving chosen mythologies or mythic creatures into their own personal narratives. This is a writing intensive course, welcome to all level of students in their storytelling journey. Assignments will cover exploratory, intermediate, and advanced work. Class is hybrid (meeting in person and via Zoom TBD in course schedule) during Wednesday evenings 6pm-9:30pm. Students who are place-based can request full remote work with faculty approval.
