This in-person intermediate to advance-level course focuses on conventional principles and techniques of drawing human portraits. In this class, students will work with an emphasis on drawing through close observation of a live model. Working from life, studying the master artists, and exploring fundamental concepts, students will gain the experience of investigating the significance of portraiture in the context of the greater art world. Students will be introduced to a variety of drawing materials and techniques as well as basic art terminology and skills, including basic anatomy, proportion, sighting, perspective, value, and composition.
Students will learn from studying and understanding the Loomis and Reilly portrait drawing techniques and how to adapt the nuances of a real model. Supported by online video tutorials, students will have the opportunity to gain a confident approach to drawing the eyes, mouth, nose, ears, hair, and hands. Weekly progress check-ins will be conducted, as well as an end-of-the-quarter class critique.
Class sessions will be held once a week, and supplemental tutorials will be available to complete homework objectives via Canvas. Students may expect an average of 6-8 hours each week to complete assignments.
